Garrard 3rd Ky Vol Infty Colonel, Having been in the service since 8/7/61 and now being satisfied from Camp exposure and from injuries received at the fight Richmond Ky on 8/30/62 that I am not able to discharge duties of Major of your regiment I have tender to you my resignation. I am impilled to this course by a sense of duty to my government {something} as I am that a man should not hold the place that I hold and receive the path that my office gives without being able to perform the duties the government expects of an officer of my rank. I very much repent{?} - that my sense of honor requiring me to adopt - this course. My whole time and (something} shall at all times be devoted to the Union Cause although out of the service.
